Restoration of vintage jewellery boxes

Conversion of cutlery canteen to multi-drawer jewellery casket

The client wished to convert a large cutlery canteen to a jewel casket. The canteen had a split and warped lid and a faulty lock. The finish was an ancient dark varnish. After stripping, the lock and splits were repaired and the box was waxed to bring the natural oak grain look. All cutlery fittings were removed and the drawers were lined with a tan skiver. Individual ring compartments were constructed to the client’s specification. In addition, a secret lower compartment was inserted in the lower drawer. The joints that were constructed, were overlaid in dark blue skiver and individually gold tooled.

We conducted a full repair internally on all divisions with silk lining. The external rotten leather was replaced with blue calf and gold tooled with a plain design. We also added the current owner’s initials and provided a replacement key for the Brahma lock.

In addition to an internal repair, we also conducted a re-lining procedure with a variety of cloths and leathers as appropriate. The slopes were lined with sheep skiver, tooled with a blind and gold leaf.
